Do CPA Exam Credits Expire? Dates, Rules and Remedies

Passing the US CPA exam is a significant accomplishment for accountants across the globe. But even then, the CPA journey is not over; you’ll have to fulfil the licensing requirements to claim the CPA designation.

Almost all states require 1 to 2 years of verifiable and relevant experience. For a few state boards that require additional educational requirements (e.g. the 150-hour rule), you will need to take the courses as well.

Do CPA Exam Credits Expire?

The answer is no for most states. This is great news because you can take all the time you need to fulfil the licensing requirements. But a few states do set a time limit between the passing of the CPA exam and licensing application. If you anticipate difficulties completing the licensing requirements within three years, ask your state board whether any such deadline exists in your state.

Do CPA Exam Credits Expire in 3 Years for These International Candidates?

If you sit for the CPA exam in an international testing location, you are supposed to complete the licensing requirements within three years. Each state adheres to this rule differently, but be aware of its existence. Candidates must plan ahead to make sure that their exam credits don’t expire since it is often difficult to find supervisors and verifiers who are US CPAs in countries outside of USA.

If you haven’t applied to take the CPA exam yet, it is best to pick a state with flexible experience requirements. If you have already passed the CPA exam, and are considering transferring your exam credit to a more “favourable” state, you can do that too.

For international candidates who are taking the exam within US jurisdictions, the 3-year limit does not apply.

Additional CPEs May be Required

Some states do not have an expiry date on CPA exam credits, but if candidates do not apply for the license within a reasonable time frame, they must take certain CPE (continuing professional education) courses . Please check with your state board for the latest rules regarding this because this time frame is defined differently in different states.
