CIA
Choose the CIA if your goal is internal audit, risk, compliance or controls, with a credential recognized across 170 countries.

If you are a graduate, a CA or a finance professional wondering whether to add an audit credential, this page compares the CIA (Certified Internal Auditor, from the IIA) with CMA India (Cost and Management Accountant, from ICMAI). ICMAI is a statutory body set up under the Cost and Works Accountants Act, 1959. It was formerly called ICWAI.

Choose the CIA if your goal is internal audit, risk, compliance or controls, with a credential recognized across 170 countries.
Choose CMA India if your goal is cost and management accounting or cost audit roles in India.
They are separate qualifications from separate bodies, and neither replaces the other.
The IIA calls it the only globally recognized internal audit certification, held by more than 220,000 CIAs in 170 countries.
The three parts are booked at Pearson VUE test centers through the year, and you can take them in the order you wish.
The 2025 syllabus follows the Global Internal Audit Standards. Part 2 covers data analytics, AI, machine learning and robotic process automation, and Part 1 includes fraud risk.
With a degree you can sit the exams before completing the experience requirement, and active CAs (ICAI) can take a one-part Challenge Exam instead.
