Enrolled Agent Exam Success: Understanding Passing Rates and Scores

Introduction

Enrolled Agent (EA) license is the goal of an aspiring tax professional. It signifies a deep commitment to mastering the complexities of tax law and representing taxpayers before the IRS. As you prepare for this professional milestone, one of the most frequently discussed topics is the EA exam passing score. Understanding what this score represents and how it impacts your preparation can be the key to a successful EA journey. Read the article below to get the clarity of your EA exam and its passing score.

What is EA Exam?

The EA exam is officially known as the Special Enrolment Examination (SEE), conducted by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). This rigorous test assesses your proficiency in tax related matters like advice, represent, and prepare tax returns for individuals or businesses, and deals with issues related to collections and tax appeals. To be eligible for the EA licensure, candidates must qualify all the three parts of SEE.

The SEE exam consists of 3 papers having 100 MCQs in each. The stipulated time for each paper is 3.5 hours. The 3 parts of the exam are:

Part 1- Individuals: Related to individual tax returns and tax obligations,

Part 2- Businesses: Related to tax issues in businesses and specialized entities,

Part 3- Representations, Procedures and Processes: Focuses on the IRS procedures, ethics, and representation practices.

What is the EA exam passing rate?

According to the testing window 2022-23 for the Enrolled Agent exam, the passing rate for Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 are respectively 60%, 69%, and 70%. Compared to the other professional accounting exams, the passing rate of EA exam is high for each part. But that doesn’t mean the exam is easy, it does mean that a candidate can have the ability to crack the exam with a little confidence and regular course of study.

What is the EA exam passing score?

The answer to this question is very straight. The EA exam is graded on a scale of 40 to 130 available points, and the scaled passing score of EA exam set by the IRS is 105. Scoring at least 105 points demonstrates that you have the knowledge to practice before the IRS and deserve all the benefits that come with earning your EA. The foundation of this score is the number of questions you will answer correctly out of the 85 operational questions. The IRS mathematically transforms your number of correct answers into a standardized scaled score.

Failing candidates are provided a scaled score value so that they may see how close they are to being successful. Candidates that receive a scaled score of 104 are very close to passing. Candidates with a scaled score of 45 are far from being qualified in the exam.
